Cliffs Notes: October 10, 2023

I am hoping that you had a meaningful Thanksgiving weekend. Actually, I pray that “meaningful” is how you live out all of your relationships, which leads to an important question: “what is meaningful?” Take a moment to come up with a working definition. Now ask the following questions:

What is a meaningful use of your days?
What is a meaningful message or sermon?
What is a meaningful date?
Who are meaningful people in your life and what makes them meaningful?
Does being meaningful mean busy?
Is meaningful ever uncomfortable?
Does being meaningful mean that you are a human-doing, rather than a human-being?
How do we extend “meaningful” experiences to others?

Every time I have time with my kids, which includes hearing how they are, laughing, hearing their plans, playing games, eating, walking, learning, debating, playing tennis, or any other experience of being together, and connecting this is meaningful. My definition of “meaningful” in relation to the Christian journey, is about connection. Somehow the meaningful experience is one where I feel connected to God and others. It is a deeply relational connection that is less transactional (“you scratch my back and I will…”), and more covenantal. Meaningful connection is one where you feel like someone has really ‘seen’ you, and has spoken into your life. Not just any words, but with life-giving Gospel words – not preaching but somehow translated into the current reality.

I visited with someone recently, and they were eager to “get through the business”. Once we discussed the business items, my friend told me about how they were praying for my family, they asked questions about my kids and laughed with me about funny stories. I asked about his family. We spoke of a few other personal issues. My new friend did not make the time feel rushed, but like he had all day for me! We then prayed together. This was a meaningful experience which might only have been a business meeting had it not been for an intentionality on my friend’s part.

I pray that your church family experience would be meaningful. I am challenging you to make this week meaningful for others… I pray for meaningful church families, and meaningful Sunday mornings together. Perhaps we have settled for less, and perhaps it is your responsibility to contribute to meaningful.

2023 SCHOLARSHIPS:http://www.fmcic.ca/scholarships/

LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP PLAN (LSP) [APPLY TWICE PER YEAR]:

[PLEASE NOTE:  The FMCiC preference for LSP is for students to attend one of the approved schools on this list. However, if you decide to apply to a non-approved school, you must first send a request to the Credentialing Coordinator to determine whether the committee will approve funding for you to study at a non-approved school. Along with your request, please include a written explanation as to why you are choosing to study at a non-approved institution. It is strongly recommended that you do this before paying tuition, and well in advance of the LSP deadline. The Credentialing Coordinator, along with the LSP committee, will consider each request individually and according to LSP policy.]

The Leadership Scholarship Plan (LSP) provides financial assistance to candidates who are studying to meet the educational requirements for credentialed ministry, or for members of conference pursuing continuing education.

PLEASE NOTE DEADLINE DATE: October 15 is the next deadline to apply for LSP for any courses taken during the spring, summer and/or fall semesters of 2023. The 2023 application forms and instructions are now available to download from the link above.  Please use the application forms marked “rev 2023.”

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS [APPLY ONCE PER YEAR]:
The Special Scholarships provide financial assistance to those who are members of a Free Methodist church pursuing post-secondary education to grow in their Christian faith, to those who are pursuing credentialed ministry, and to members of conference pursuing continuing education.
