Cliffs Notes: June 27, 2023

We have now completed our final Regional Gathering for 2023.  We had another wonderful event – this time in Calgary.  It was, once again, very special being together in person.  Thank you, West Springs, for hosting! It was so good to make new friends and reconnect with old ones. 

On Sunday, Karlene and I worshipped with Pineridge House Community Church.  Pastor Dan, who is also the founding pastor, has established a culture of discipleship. It is his primary focus, and it is evident in the conversations we had with ‘Pineridgers’ on Sunday morning.  We especially enjoyed a time for comments, questions and answers at the end of the service.  Thank you Pineridge, it was so great to be with you.

MY SUMMER PRAYER FOR YOU

My friends I have been given the gift of being able to take an extended vacation this summer. I was hoping for a sabbatical but it is not possible this year for many good reasons, including two good new hires! I will be available to them, the National Leadership Team will have a 2-day retreat, and my executive assistant will help you reach me in an emergency.

I have a pile of books that I am looking forward to. A kayak that is already calling my name. I also have some house-projects which need my attention. I am on a slow-pitch team which plays Friday nights in my village. Karlene has a road trip planned for us. She and I will play tennis. Of course, I look forward to time with my kids, apparently, we are going to a Jays game, and on a camping trip. I have a week scheduled at an Ignatian Retreat Centre in Quebec. At first, I was thinking it would be good to practice my French at the Quebec location, but then I remembered that it is a silent retreat centre. I will try to remember to be silent in French!

I pray that you will have a refreshing summer. I pray that “out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever, amen!” (Ephesians 3).

LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP PLAN (LSP) [APPLY TWICE PER YEAR]:

[PLEASE NOTE:  The FMCiC preference for LSP is for students to attend one of the approved schools on this list. However, if you decide to apply to a non-approved school, you must first send a request to the Credentialing Coordinator to determine whether the committee will approve funding for you to study at a non-approved school. Along with your request, please include a written explanation as to why you are choosing to study at a non-approved institution. It is strongly recommended that you do this before paying tuition, and well in advance of the LSP deadline. The Credentialing Coordinator, along with the LSP committee, will consider each request individually and according to LSP policy.]

The Leadership Scholarship Plan (LSP) provides financial assistance to candidates who are studying to meet the educational requirements for credentialed ministry, or for members of conference pursuing continuing education.

October 15 is the next deadline to apply for LSP for any courses taken during the spring, summer and/or fall semesters of 2023. The 2023 application forms and instructions are now available to download from the link above.  Please use the application forms marked “rev 2023.”

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS [APPLY ONCE PER YEAR]:
The Special Scholarships provide financial assistance to those who are members of a Free Methodist church pursuing post-secondary education to grow in their Christian faith, to those who are pursuing credentialed ministry, and to members of conference pursuing continuing education.

October 15 is the deadline to apply for the annual Special Scholarships for courses taken during the 2023 calendar year – apply online anytime from the link above.  Special Scholarships are awarded in late November/early December each year.

Ordained and Commissioned Ministers (except retirees) are to annually report hours acquired during each year for Continuing Education Units (CEUs).  Check the link above for information on CEUs, and a list of examples of many different types of life-long learning that can be applied as CEUs.
