Cliffs Notes: April 9, 2024

For years now I have recommended to boards and leadership teams Ruth Halley Barton’s, Pursuing God’s Will Together: A Discernment Practice for Leadership Groups. In fact, I invited the Board of Administration to read it together when I first became Bishop. One of the gold nuggets in her book is the call for leaders to pray a prayer for indifference in preparation for each meeting.

I invite all participants of General Conference to pray this prayer in preparation. Here’s how Barton explains it:

The prayer for indifference. The first and most essential dynamic of discernment is the movement toward indifference… In the context of spiritual discernment indifference is a positive term signifying that “I am indifferent to anything but God’s will.” This is “interior freedom” or a state of openness to God in which we are free from undue attachment to any particular outcome. There is a capacity to relinquish whatever might keep us from choosing God and love, and we have come to a place where we want God and God’s will more than anything – more than ego gratification, more than wanting to look good in the eyes of others, more than personal ownership, comfort, or advantage. We ask God to bring us to a place where we want “God’s will, nothing more, nothing less, nothing else” so that we can pray the prayer of indifference – “not my will but Thine be done.”

A question that can help us identify where we need to be made indifferent is, ‘what needs to die in me in order for God’s will to come forth in my life?’ or, ‘is there anything I need to set aside so that I can be open to what God wants?’ (Barton, p. 63.)

This past Sunday Karlene and I worshiped with our Timmins FM family. Though a small church family, with no pastor, they have been quite resourceful with their building: a school (the school director attends the church), a Christian radio station uses space, AA has designated space, and a Pentecostal church plant shares the space. Thanks Timmins for making sure that a space dedicated to God is well used ministry space! As you pray for Timmins, they are asking God for a vision for the next season: they would love a pastor and they would love to become a healthy church family reaching their community.
