What does money have to do with discipleship?

If you’re like me, you probably don’t have a keen interest in the topic of money, especially as it relates to your spiritual journey. Other than balancing my bank account and paying the bills each month, hoping there is enough, I had never really given it much thought. That all changed one day when my wife presented me a copy of Your Money Counts by Howard Dayton and suggested it might be a good read.

Thus began a journey that still surprises me. I began to discover what the Word says about money.  Jesus really did have something to say about it. He spoke about it frequently; in fact, fifteen percent of what He taught had to do with this important subject.

Jesus knew there was a seduction around money that could lead to issues of the heart, a subject matter we find throughout His teaching. Jesus warned us that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also. (Matt. 6:21).

The culture of the world, along with the enemy of our souls, seeks to shape our thinking and habits in the financial area.  We must remain vigilant to ensure that this and every area of our lives is in alignment with the teachings and commands of the One we follow.

The journey of discipleship is one in which we grow in awareness and understanding of God’s truth and with the guidance of His Holy Spirit we do our best to walk it out day by day.  One day, we all want to hear “Well done good and faithful servant.”  Let us be faithful in our efforts to learn about the often overlooked area of financial discipleship.
