General Conference June 5-6… But first, a Sabbath Week

Dear Chaplains, Pastors, Delegates, Board chairs, and all those who call FMCiC home,

What usually happens at General Conference time is members of Conference take time off to travel to and from the event, and obviously three days attending the actual event. A virtual conference, which is what we are planning this year, only requires travel from one room in your house to another, so you will be able to optimize on all that will be offered.

I believe that we could even make an argument for the proposal below, being likened to Old Testament festivals that required time away from work, travel time, and therefore the gift of family time and resting time. God built several festivals into His people’s annual rhythm, beyond the daily and weekly sabbath. John Wesley traveled thousands of miles preaching, but in between he logged a lot of horseback time – time that he prayed, thought and read. The difference between busy 50 years ago, and busy today is that technology gives us no down time, no time to breathe. We are not good sabbath-ers, and of course there is a pandemic.

In consultation with your Regional Coaches, the National Leadership Team would like to extend to you leaders and to your churches a week off, the week prior to General Conference, May 31-June 4. It is my hope that all of our churches will participate in the June 6 worship service, which also means that you (pastors) will not be preparing a message that week. I would recommend that you would offer all your local church leaders the week off – a church-wide sabbath.

Breathe, read, write, exercise, create, worship, family (I am using “family” as a verb) and PRAY. Perhaps make it a church-wide week of prayer with a prayer guide, or triads that would connect a couple of times with each other to pray. Perhaps you will find a spiritual director to help you plan a spiritually meaningful week (I saw a pamphlet that Lakeview created for prayer for their church – I’m sure they’d share!). If you prefer, then use the week to catch up on all the virtual workshops being offered for General Conference (and certainly invite your church family to watch them too).

The bottom line is that May 31-June 4 is being offered to you and your church family as a sabbath week.

SPRING GATHERING

LOVE LED US HERE – A PILGRIMAGE
SATURDAY, APRIL 17 @ 12PM EST
