Cliffs Notes: February 6, 2024

This weekend I was in Madoc for Pastor Tyler’s induction service. Some children stood and gave a fun and creative speech, which included the words, “we already love you!” I loved hearing that. Our beloved retired minister Rev. Carl Bull has always said that our people need to know that their pastors love them, before they are responsive to their pastor’s ideas, preaching and leadership. It was also very special that a couple of older pastors, who are mentoring Tyler, came to support him.

When we moved to the Ottawa region I was excited to skate on the canal. I loved it growing up and over the years I have tried to get back at this time of year in order to enjoy the canal. It looks like this will be the second year in a row that it has not been cold enough for it to open for Winterlude. I was with a weather specialist this weekend and I asked him if this was a cyclical weather pattern, global warming or something else. He did explain that there are patterns and cycles, but most believe that global warming is in play. I honestly don’t want to start a conversation about global warming! I don’t want you to send me any You Tube videos about your take on global warming!

Global warming is not a salvific issue and should not divide a congregation or the Church. However, what I am interested in doing is reminding us of what we do need to agree on: creation care. We are called to be stewards of this planet. We are entrusted with caring for God’s creation. The Church must shine as stewards of God’s creation, not just to set an example to a culture that talks a big game but continues to exploit our planet, BUT also because we genuinely love God’s gift of creation, and understand the responsibility we have to care.

I mention this, because at General Conference this year we will be discussing an important resolution regarding Creation Care. Your church will have about a month to review and discuss all agenda items at General Conference. We have also invited a creation care ministry to give a workshop about how each local church can participate in creation care. Some research I read recently observed that people care deeply about the environment and are somewhat confused by the Church’s ambivalence towards it. A Christian leader said to me that care for creation is another form of evangelism in this new season. I am hoping that creation care is a consideration as your church family develops a 3-5 Ministry Plan…

2024 SCHOLARSHIPS:https://fmcic.ca/scholarships/

LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP PLAN (LSP) [APPLY TWICE PER YEAR]:

[PLEASE NOTE:  The FMCiC preference for LSP is for students to attend one of the approved schools on this list. However, if you decide to apply to a non-approved school, you must first send a request to the Credentialing Coordinator to determine whether the committee will approve funding for you to study at a non-approved school. Along with your request, please include a written explanation as to why you are choosing to study at a non-approved institution. It is strongly recommended that you do this before paying tuition, and well in advance of the LSP deadline. The Credentialing Coordinator, along with the LSP committee, will consider each request individually and according to LSP policy.]

The Leadership Scholarship Plan (LSP) provides financial assistance to candidates who are studying to meet the educational requirements for credentialed ministry, or for members of conference pursuing continuing education.

February 15 is the next deadline to apply for LSP for any courses taken during the winter semester of 2024. The 2024 application forms and instructions are available to download from the link above.  Please use the application forms marked “rev 2024.”

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS [APPLY ONCE PER YEAR]:
The Special Scholarships provide financial assistance to those who are members of a Free Methodist church pursuing post-secondary education to grow in their Christian faith, to those who are pursuing credentialed ministry, and to members of conference pursuing continuing education.

October 15 is the deadline to apply for the annual Special Scholarships for courses taken during the 2024 calendar year – apply online anytime from the link above.  Special Scholarships are awarded in late November/early December each year.
