Adam Kline is the Intercultural Engagement Team Leader. The Intercultural Engagement Team (IET) provides coordinated oversight and support to missional efforts and projects by local churches across The Free Methodist Church in Canada. The main objective of these missional efforts is to share the good news of Jesus with people who are otherwise unlikely to encounter it. The team also includes Vinola Pakkianathen, Missions Administrator, Rodney Peterson, Board of Administration representative, Paula Moriarity, International Child Care Ministries Director, Sam Salaam, attends Westdale FMC in Napanee, Jason Tripp, Valleyview Community Church, and Rob Hargon, Sault Ste. Marie Free Methodist Church.
So that’s the who and what regarding the IET, but beyond team leader, who is Adam Kline? Born and raised in Ottawa, Adam has spent the last thirty-five years discovering what it means to be a faithful follower of Jesus. Adam has an undergraduate degree from Houghton College and a Master of Divinity from Wesley Seminary (Indiana Western University). Adam and his wife Cait live just north of Belleville, ON with their three children Ali (12), Evelyn (10), and Liam (9).
In addition to being the IET leader, Adam is also the pastor at Marmora Free Methodist Church. “I have been a part of the Free Methodist movement for ten years. For the first eight and a half years, I was the Wesleyan pastor at the Madoc Free Methodist and Wesleyan Church in Madoc, ON. It’s a hybrid community. The Wesleyan church was my home tribe, but my role in Madoc allowed me to participate in all things Free Methodist, and I was really excited to learn and be a part of it all. I’ve made so many great connections and friendships.”
Adam left the Madoc church to be the interim pastor and eventually pastor at Marmora Free Methodist Church. Adam’s position at Marmora is part-time, so he spent time praying to discern what else God had in store for him. “I was thinking a lot about equipping my congregation to be more engaged in the changing Canadian culture. What it means to reach out to those different than us. What it means for us to befriend to minister to “the other” because these things have always been near and dear to my heart.”
When Adam saw the part-time Intercultural Engagement Team Leader job description, “A lot of it really jumped out at me and really seemed to connect where I was moving towards in terms of being a resource and support to local pastors and churches to go beyond the familiar and those not like us. This position would allow me to serve, equip, and support my colleagues in ways that I always wanted to be supported and equipped.”
Think of Adam as the middle man for the congregation with a specific concern for a need here at home in Canada or across the world. “The IET can educate and equip that congregation by providing practical resources and information. We can also connect them with people to partner with.”
