- Story
Phyllis passed away peacefully in Sault St Marie, on January 24, 2016 in her 90th year. She was the dear wife of the late Dr. Alton A. Gould for over 63 years.
Bishop Elford writes, “As a missionary in her own right and as the wife of a pastor, she left her mark on the lives of the many people that she influenced during her years of ministry as a missionary in Hong Kong and the Philippines and later when the Goulds gave pastoral leadership at the Richmond Hill and Wesley Chapel Free Methodist churches. Though Phyllis was trained and served as a nurse, she was also a capable instructor in Christian Education. In both of these settings as well as others, she interacted with all kinds of people both within the ministries where she served as well as in the communities where the Goulds lived.
Those of us who know the story of Phyllis’ call to work as a missionary know that in addition to having a deep dependence upon the Lord, she also had a sense of adventure about her – even what some would call “sanctified spunk”. Another place that this “sanctified spunk” showed up was in their marriage. All of us recall with deep fondness Alton’s force of character and certainty about what he thought. It was always a delight to enjoy their company and, from time to time, a bit amusing to watch Phyllis take Alton on and correct him on some detail. Rarely did she change his mind, but she did not surrender her ground either.”
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband Alton, and their daughter Ann. She is survived by Gail Storey, Robert Gould, Sandra Holloway, their spouses, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
We give thanks for this life of faithful service in hospitals, the mission field and local churches.
