As we entered 2026, the Retired Ministers Team (RMT) of the The Free Methodist Church in Canada reached out to one of the most valued groups in our movement — our retired ministers.
With prayer and gratitude, we invited our seniors to participate in the 2026 Retired Ministers Survey. This survey is more than a questionnaire. It is an important way we listen, learn, and strengthen our support for those who have faithfully given their lives to ministry.
Why the Survey Matters
The Retired Ministers Team was created with a clear mandate: to serve ministers in three important seasons:
- Preparation for retirement – during the final 10 years before officially retiring
- The transition period – navigating the shift from active ministry
- Retirement years – continuing connection, care, and contribution
Our support is expressed in three key ways:
- Connectional activities among retirees
- Information-sharing, such as webinars and retirement planning resources
- Advocacy to denominational leadership regarding key issues, challenges, and gaps in support systems
In 2021, shortly after the formation of the RMT, we conducted our first survey to better understand the interests and concerns of retired ministers. Five years later, it was time to ask again:
- How are we doing?
- What has been helpful?
- What concerns remain?
- Where do we need to strengthen our support?
A Culture of Listening
One of the hallmarks of a healthy church is its willingness to listen — especially to those who have carried leadership for decades.
Our retired ministers bring wisdom, institutional memory, and lived experience. They understand the joys and pressures of ministry in ways few others can. Their insight helps shape not only how we care for retirees, but how we prepare future generations of leaders.
By taking a few moments to respond, our seniors are continuing to serve the church — shaping policies, programs, and priorities that will bless others.
Looking Ahead
The responses to this survey will guide the Retired Ministers Team in:
- Planning meaningful connection opportunities
- Designing relevant information sessions and resources
- Advocating effectively to FMCIC leadership
- Identifying areas where additional care or structural change may be needed
We are deeply grateful to every retired minister who took the time to participate. Your voice matters. Your experience matters. And your continued partnership strengthens our entire movement. As we move through 2026 together, may we continue to honour the legacy of faithful service — and ensure that those who have served so well continue to feel valued, connected, and supported.
