Tough as Her

tough as her

“Every day, girls and women in the developing world face unimaginable obstacles.

Right now, somewhere in the world, a suffering girl walks for miles to fetch water or firewood. Then, she’ll walk just as many miles while carrying a backbreaking load. She’ll do this several times a day, bearing a burden of indescribable pain.

She’ll risk drowning as she crosses raging rivers, and risk being swallowed whole in fields of mud, just to get to school and work.

She’ll risk her life at great heights, ravaged by hunger as she climbs the treetops in search of food for her family.

She’ll risk her health, cooking over an open fire in an unventilated room. Every day, with every act, she’ll demonstrate the true meaning of tough. Now ask yourself – “Am I as tough as her?””

Joanne Bell, World Relief Canada’s Vice-Chair, asks this question in her Tough as Her sponsorship video.  World Relief Canada’s Tough as Her raises awareness and funds to help provide support and relief to women and girls in developing countries.  Joanne is part of a Tough as Her team participating in Tough Mudder, a 16 km obstacle course race held in Toronto on August 15, 2015.

And why is Joanne participating in Tough as Her?  “I’m going to step out of my comfort zone and I’m going to do this.  It’s about trying and pushing yourself to be uncomfortable because that’s what women have to do every day in the developing world.  I’m doing this because in some small way I want to make a difference in the lives of women, girls and communities around the world.”

Joanne doesn’t want to do this alone.  She would love you to join the Tough as Her Toronto team and run with her.  You can also start a team and participate in the Tough Mudder in BC or Alberta or any other type of mud run.  World Relief Canada can help you get started just check out the link below.

If you aren’t up to participating this year, please consider sponsoring Joanne or another Tough as Her team.  Joanne and her husband Les are so passionate about Tough as Her that they will match all donations up to $5,000.

The Free Methodist Church in Canada partners with World Relief Canada to further our involvement with humanitarian crises and longer-term community development, including food security and micro-finance.  Joining a Tough as Her team or sponsoring someone is a unique way to support women and girls in developing countries.
